A Guide to Beautiful Bedding

Let's start with the basics: bedspread, coverlet, quilt, duvet, comforter - what do they all mean and what do you use together?
Bedspread. A bedspread is the general term that refers to pre-filled bed covers intended for use as the top layer on a bed. Comforters, quilts and coverlets are considered bedspreads. Serving multiple functions, bedspreads can be both decorative and warming, thick or light weight and come in a variety of fabrics.
Comforter. Comforters are filled with layers of material including polyester batting (a synthetic fiber), down feathers or wool. The loft (thickness) of the filling determines the weight as well as the level of insulation. Plain comforters (duvets) are normally used inside a duvet cover while decorative comforters are used alone or layered for decorative purposes.
Comforters are stitched or quilted to secure the filling and ensure that it is evenly distributed. They are intended to be the bedspread, sitting on top of sheets.
Comforter sizes run slightly larger than actual bed sizes to allow for draping over the sides of the bed. Typical sizes in the United States for comforters are:
- Twin = 64" (162.56 cm) Width x 87" (220.98 cm) Length
- Queen / Full = 87" (220.98 cm) Width x 87" (220.98 cm) Length
- King = 101" (256.54 cm) Width x 90" (228,6 cm) Length.
Duvet and cover. A duvet is essentially a soft flat bag filled with down, feathers or a synthetic alternative. It is recommended that duvets are inserted into a removable cover, much like a pillow and pillow case. Most duvet covers feature button or zipper closure.
Quilt. Beautiful quilt patterns are plentiful that showcase the traditions and history passed from one generation to another. Quilts are usually composed of three layers of fiber. Quilts consist of a woven cloth top, a layer of batting and a woven back, all stitched together in decorative patterns.
Coverlet. A coverlet is a lightweight, non-reversible bedspread that is usually either quilted or woven. Classically designed as a decorative layer to go over thicker bedspreads, coverlets often have a thin layer of batting, making them appropriate for use as a stand-alone bed covering, depending on the weight. They can also be used as throws on a bed or sofa.
