Fun with Faux Fur
Faux fur is a big fashion trend this season, but sewing this chunky, furry stuff may seem like quite a task. However, if you take a little time to get ready and follow a few guidelines it will make sewing with faux fur a snap!
Cutting fur doesn't have to be a fuzzy mess. Simply turn the fur over, and with a brightly colored fine-point permanent marker, trace your pattern pieces on the wrong side in a single layer. Make sure all the pieces are positioned so that the fur's nap (direction of the fur) is running in the same direction on every piece. Use scissors or an exacto knife to cut out your pieces, and cut through only the backing fabric, avoiding the fur fibers on the right side.
Pin pieces together perpendicular to the seam with long straight pins. As you pin, push fur back into the seam with the tip of a pin so as little fur as possible is poking out along the seam line. Use a damp sponge to brush fur away from the seam line when you are pinning.
Stitch pieces together according to pattern directions using a straight or zigzag stitch. Most fur can be sewn with a universal needle. Always sew a test seam to double-check the tension. A walking presser foot helps guide the fabric evenly through the machine. After you've sewn a seam, use a knitting needle or a chopstick to pull any fur caught in the seam.
For most craft projects, use rubber cement or craft glue. White glue is not recommended.
TIP: Avoid using an iron directly on faux fur; it will melt the fibers. To flatten seams, finger-press seam allowances open or use a press cloth to protect the fur.
