Curtains
This month we are featuring a fabric project that uses torn fabric strips. Feel free to use scraps you already have at home or put together some fun fabrics prints from your favorite designers. We like Michael Miller and Alexander Henry Fabrics.

Happy Scrappy Curtains

You can create fun and whimsical curtains for your home with just a few yards of fabric and basic sewing supplies. The strips can be attached to a pre-made sheer, some other fabric like burlap or just tied directly to your curtain rod. The options are endless – just use your creative mind and soon you will have a unique window treatment.

SuppliesGather Supplies
• 5-7 yards of assorted craft/quilting fabrics (some cheaper fabrics do not tear straight)
• Curtain backing if desired like pre-made sheers, burlap panels, or light/heat blocking curtains
• Sewing machine (you can also hand-stitch with a needle)
• Thread
• Fabric Scissors

Step-by-Step

  1. Lay out your fabric and snip at 1.5" to 2" intervals. Choose a width that suits your design tastes. The snips will help you tear the fabric easily and keep the fabric uniform.
  2. Next tear the fabric into strips.
  3. Clean the fabric strips of extra threads to give a more finished look to your curtains. Our designer even cut the ends at an angle so that when she tied the knots they looked polished.
  4. To achieve a varied look with the knots on the panels, cut about a 1/3 of your strips in half.
  5. Determine the length of your curtain panels. Tie the strips together using a double-knot using enough pieces to achieve your desired length. Don't worry if they are not even, you will fix that at the end.
  6. Once you have all your fabric strips tied together, pin the long strips to your backing. When the curtains look the way you want, sew the strips down.
  7. Finally, trim the bottom to create an even finished look.

We hope you enjoy creating one-of-a-kind curtains for your home.
