Pole Swags

A pole swag is another style of swag that has become popular for window treatments. A pole swag is not a continuous piece of fabric wrapped around a rod. Instead, it is cut from a pattern and sewn one swoop at a time. This style of swag can be cut on the bias or railroaded and mounted on a rod with Velcro or staples, or on blocks or ledges of wood. Like the standard bias swag, the pole swag can be specified as traditional or casual.

Pole swags are finished on the top of the swag and drop off of the rod or blocks as specified by the designer. This style of swag can be specified up to 25" deep. A pole swag can hug a rod or have a drop of as much as 6 to 8 inches; the longer the drop the more dramatic the look. The pole swag will not hide a window frame or wall behind the pole, but instead is used when you want to see the wood or wall detail.

A pole swag that is bias cut and stretched across an opening greater than 52" must be considered an oversized swag. When specifying a bias cut oversized pole swag be sure to explain to your customer that you may need a seam to fabricate the size needed. In this case you must order fabric for a double swag to make the added width. You may request that your workroom check your yardage for accuracy by cutting a similar fabric and creating a pattern. You can then quote your client the correct yardage and order only what is necessary.

A pole swag that is railroaded is fabricated with the fabric running horizontally across the face of the window. This type of swag can be made in multiple swoops and is usually used in a more casual setting. This type of swag does not hang in perfect folds but often will break as it forms the swag.

When using cascades or side panels with a pole swag the cascade or side panel can be attached to the swag with Velcro when using a metal rod, and stapled when using a wood rod or ledges. Usually the cascade and swag will have a smaller width at the joint to give the illusion of a continuous unit.

A pole swag and cascade or side panels mounted on a rod does not have a return to the wall but falls off the rod vertically. A pole swag and cascade or side panel mounted on blocks of wood (ledges) can accommodate a return up to 5 1/2"

Measurement Tips
• Face Width – Measured from bracket to bracket.
• Finished Length – Measured from the top of the rod or mounting bracket to the longest point of the swoop.
• Drop - Always specify the amount of drop off of the rod at the top center of the swag.
• Finished Length Cascade or Side Panel – Measured from the top of the rod to the longest point of the panel or cascade. Always specify the short point of the cascade as part of the design.
