Arch Top Drapery

Arch Top Drapery

Arch Top draperies are a formed style drapery that is mounted on a board for installation. This type of drapery is specified for use on a window with a half moon top. Arch Top draperies can be lined with regular house lining or contrast lining using side seams and a hemmed bottom edge. If desired, you may also specify a pillowcase hem at the bottom and lead edge of the drapery. It is always recommended that the returns be made with the standard side hems.

Arch Top draperies can be specified with gathered heading or with French pleats, Barrel pleats, or Box pleats. The style of pleat must be specified.

Arch Top draperies must have 3 times fullness to hang properly. The cut lengths of each width must be the longest point even if the finished drapery has a cascade style hem. The program will allow for the angle of the cut if the finished style is a straight hang hem. If specifying a straight hem, you must check the box marked straight hem.

When measuring an arch top window, always make a template of the arch of the window. Show the distance from the top of the window to the ceiling. Determine with the customer where you will be installing the frame of the treatment. Advise your customer that you will be mounting on the wood of the window. Remember, you cannot have a deep return on a frame mounted arch top drapery. If you will be mounting on the wallboard, you will need to specify a curved dust cap with a return to clear the frame of the window.

Drapery Terminology

  • Width is one strip of material (can be any length) which can be pleated to a finished dimension across the TOP of between 16" and 24". A width that finishes to 24" is considered double fullness or 2 to 1; 16" finished width is considered triple fullness or 3 to 1. Any number of widths can be joined together to make the draperies properly cover the window area.
  • Panel is a single unit of draper of one or more widths.
  • Pair is two equal panels.
  • Return is the measurement from teh rod to the wall; another term is projection.
  • Overlap is the measurement, when draperies are fully closed, of having the right panel overlap the left panel. This is usually 3" for each panel.

How To Order Your Draperies
Since made to measure draperies are made to your exact specifications it is imperative that measurements be made with the greatest of care. We recommend taht you double check all measurements for accuracy. All measuring should be done with a steel tape or yardstick. Measure each window separately even when they appear to be the same size. If length varies use shortest length. • Arch Length - Measured by the longest point from the top of the window to the floor. If you are puddling the drapery, be sure to add the amount of the puddle to the arch length.
