Elegant Fireplace Mantels

Fireplace MantelA beautiful fireplace mantel will add to your holiday decor and create a festive focal point in your room. Holiday guests will be drawn to an elegantly dressed mantel. The following ideas will help you dress your fireplace mantel this season.

To create a simple, balanced mantel, follow the 3, 5 or 7 method. Uneven numbers will always work better when it comes to arranging items on any horizontal surface. For example, use a grouping of 3 different sized candles on one end, while placing a couple of larger family photos on the opposite end. Remember to layer pieces - do not line them up military style unless you are creating a very formal design in a traditional space.

A more elaborate theme can be achieved by using lush fabrics, fragrant greenery, objects that shine and glowing lights. MantelNesting fruits, ornaments, candles, bows - anything festive - into layers of greenery is one traditional look. Use enough greenery to cover the whole mantel and drape down the sides at least a quarter of the way down.

Another simple option is to use several pillar candles and place different sized pinecones in between. Place a large mirror behind them at an angle (leaning) to create depth and reflect the candle light.

To show off your wrapping skills and your beautiful wrapping paper and bows, use your mantel to display wrapped gifts as an extension of the space under your tree. Placing gifts around the room creates unexpected surprises.

Other Ideas

  • Go bigger rather than smaller
  • Group smaller things together
  • Hang your stockings on a stand placed on the hearth rather than from the mantel
  • Place wood in your fireplace - don't leave it empty
  • Buy aromatic wood like cedar, apple, balsam
  • Use nature: sticks, pinecones, magnolia cones and leaves on your hearth or mantel
  • Place gifts of various sizes and shapes along your hearth
  • Display past holiday pictures along your hearth or on the mantel
