|Guide to Outdoor Fabrics
Creating beautiful outdoor spaces is easier than ever with an abundance of fabulous outdoor fabric choices. Making sense, however, of the different brands and fabric contents can be confusing. Outdoor fabrics are made from a variety of synthetic fibers like polyester, acrylic and even cotton blends that are chemically treated during manufacturing. This process allows them to repel water and resist soiling and rotting and impede mildew growth. The following is a list of types of outdoor fabrics and name brands.
Sunbrella Outdoor Fabrics: Worry-free living is easy with durable Sunbrella fabrics. In ordinary fabrics, dyes are added to the surface of the yarn or fabric. The color only penetrates the outer layer and washes out or fades away over time. The color in Sunbrella fabrics penetrates all the way to the core, ensuring years of vibrant color and performance in your fabrics.
Solution-Dyed 100% Acrylic: Woven from Solution Dyed Acrylic Fiber these fabrics will retain their color and vibrancy for years. Soft, comfortable and breathable fabric with a soil and stain resistant finish that cleans easily and resists mildew. Best Long-Term Value.
Olefin: Polypropylene treated for outdoor use. Olefin fabric is slightly less soft than Sunbrella, but is also less expensive. It's lightweight, dries quickly and comes in lots of great colors.
Polyester: 100% Polyester when treated for outdoor use produces a material featuring a soft fabric feel. Fabrics are treated for soil and stain resistance. Polyester is naturally sun resistant and easy to care for while staying cool and comfortable.
Waverly Sun N Shade: The SnS endurance line has the antimicrobial, mold/mildew resistant properties. The light fastness is 1000-1500 hrs. and the basecloth is a diamond weave cloth. The basic SnS line is a breathable, spun polyester fabric that withstands exposure to sunlight. Fade-resistant fabric for outdoor use. Fabrics meet the rugged demands of casual outdoor living.
Chella: Chella's Luxury PERFORMANCE TEXTILES™ are the industry's first solution-dyed acrylic fabrics created to withstand both the discerning eyes of designers and architects and harsh treatment by sun, rain, freezing temperatures, hotel guests, children, and pets.
Bella Dura: Bella-DuraŽ is a true performance fabric. By encompassing proprietary yarn technology, the solution dyed Bella-DuraŽ fabrics possess in excess of 1500 hours lightfastness. They are also bleach cleanable, inherently anti-microbial, mildew and stain resistant, and exceptionally durable.
Cleaning Tip: Awnings and seat cushions should be hosed down from time to time to remove any stains or dirt buildup. Mildew actually grows on dirt particles (rather than the fabric) and will eventually work into the material itself.
When choosing outdoor fabrics remember that the price for different materials is a reliable indicator of its durability and longevity. If you select a less expensive outdoor fabric, you may end up replacing it sooner than you would with a costlier one. Regardless of the type or brand you choose, there are many beautiful fabrics available to decorate your outdoor spaces.
