FAQ Blinds and Shades
- What is the difference between PVC and PU?
-
- PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride): Made from polymerized vinyl chloride. A type of plastic that is very durable. It is naturally waterproof and mildew/mold resistant.
- PU (Polyurethane): Man-made polymer created through a chemical reaction process. It is used in many applications. For upholstery purposes, PU is usually soft, durable and flexible. UV and Mildew resistance make it popular for outdoor applications.
- PU-coated polyester is most common for higher-quality faux leather.
- Is vinyl the same as faux leather?
- Technically, vinyl is a broader term that includes faux leather. Not all faux leather is made from vinyl, but it can be.
- How does vinyl compare to real leather?
- Genuine top grain leather has many great qualities including that it is natural (usually made from cow hide) with unique characteristics, a warm touch and is extremely durable and can last decades with care. While good PU can mimic leather, it will provide a more uniform and smoother look and be durable, it is not as breathable as genuine leather. PU is much cheaper and water resistant. PU is considered vegan leather and cruelty-free.
- Does vinyl peel or crack?
- PVC is more prone to peel and crack over time than polyurethane. It has a plastic feel and doesn't "breathe," so it becomes brittle with age or heat. This does not apply to all PVC so always get samples first and compare test results like double rubs. The higher double rub count, the longer it will last.
In person test: Gently bend or fold the sample. PVC may crease sharply; good PU will flex. - Are there newer more environmentally friendly options?
- Silicone or bio-based faux leathers: Newer and more sustainable, with much better longevity.
Polycarbonate PU (polycarbonate-based polyurethane) is a high-performance type of polyurethane that uses polycarbonate polyols as a key ingredient in its formulation. This gives it significantly improved durability, flexibility, and resistance to environmental stress compared to standard PU. Want to see a collection? Matinee Polycarbonate PU Phtalate Free
Silcone is a top-tier man-made that is often better than PU or PVC. It is made from sand(silicon), oxygen, carbon and hydrogen. It is a more rubber-like material which means that it won't mimic leather as well but it is flexible and highly resistant to heat, UV and chemicals.
