All About Phthalate-Free Vinyl and Faux Leather

What are phthalates? A family of chemicals added to plastic during manufacturing. Technically, they do not bond to the plastic so they can leach out over time. Phthalates were the best option for making rigid plastics(vinyl) more flexible without breaking. They have been used reliably for decades in medical, automotive, and consumer goods. There are alternatives but prices go up.

Why are people concerned about Phtalate's?
There is evidence to suggest that these leached out chemicals contribute to endocrine disruption, developmental problems, asthma and allergies and possibly are carcinogens.

Phthalate-Free products are safer for sensitive populations and are more eco-conscious.

Common alternatives are Silicone, Polycarbonate PU, Polyethylene or polypropylene-based and certified Phthalate-Free PVC.

Look for:

  1. “Phthalate-Free”
  2. “Prop 65 compliant”
  3. Certifications like Greenguard, Oeko-Tex, or REACH compliant may indicate less phthalate
